Natural Hair Loss

In this article we discuss the common natural hair loss known as male pattern baldness and alopecia areata which is loss of hair leaving a circular bald spot which can occur anywhere on the head.

Male pattern baldness is most often a hereditary condition called androgenic alopecia.  Hair begins to fall from the hairline along the forehead and leaves an “M” shaped hairline along the forehead.  Two of the most effective treatments for this type of natural hair loss are Rogaine and Propecia.

Rogaine-This product is an over the counter cream to be applied to the affected area.  The product works best in younger men who have experienced hair loss for less than five years.  Men with cardiovascular problems should use this product with caution since it may cause an increased heart rate and dizziness.

Propecia-This is a prescription pill that lowers the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is known to cause male pattern baldness.  Results can take 2-12 months to realize.  Continued use is required to maintain the benefits.

In the case of alopecia areata hair regrows in most people within a year so the condition is often temporary.  A healthy diet can go a long way toward regrowing hair.  The patient should avoid foods of little nutritional value such as white flower, white sugar, fried foods, etc. The diet should consist of whole grain flower, whole grain brown rice, fresh vegetables, fresh meats, and foods containing omega-3 oils such as fish, nuts, and flax seed.  The type of healthy lifestyle which supports the health of the patient’s internal organs will support the health of hair and skin as well.

A couple of studies have shown natural treatment of alopecia areata to be possible.  In the first two groups of patients were treated.  The first group was treated with a blend of  essential oils which were a mixture of thyme, rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood essential oils in a mixture of carrier oils (jojoba and grapeseed).  The second group was treated with only the carrier oils.  After seven months 44% of the patients treated with the essential oils showed an improvement while only 15% treated with the carrier oils showed an improvement.

In another study published in the Journal of Dermatology two groups of patients were treated with onion juice (applied topically) and plain water.  The onion group began experiencing hair regrowth after only two weeks.  At 4 weeks regrowth was seen in 73.9% and at six weeks 86.9% saw regrowth.  Virtually no regrowth was seen in the plain water group.

Overall there is plenty of reason to be optimistic for patients with natural hair loss.
