What To Use For A Garage Floor Coating

If you have almost slipped getting out your car in the garage then you know how dangerous this can be. This is especially true if you have some oil spots or drips on the floor and then you bring in rain water or melting snow as you drive onto the garage floor. The combination of oil and water is a recipe for disaster as the old saying. “oil and water don’t mix,” states. The best way to protect yourself from a potentially damaging slip fall is to apply a garage floor coating.
There are several options you can choose from but the one that will offer the longest life span is a product based on epoxy. Epoxy, as you may know, is the hard material that forms fiberglass. A resin and a hardener are mixed together and then brushed or sprayed over a woven glass mesh. The mesh provides lateral support but the combination resin/hardener are what give it the strength.
For a garage floor the concrete itself acts as the support structure and the epoxy solution then is used as a hard coating. The hardener and resin both come in the liquid form but as soon as you mix the two together they start a heat producing chemical reaction which transforms them into a solid. This solid actually bonds with the concrete surface giving a result that is a very durable garage floor coating.
Before the mixture cures it is important to apply an anti-slip agent to offer good traction if the floor gets wet or is contaminated. This can be either a sand like, gritty material or paint flecks. The paint additive is becoming quite popular as a way to make your floor look even better. Most people tint the actually epoxy with one color and then use a complementary color to add depth and interest to the floor.
If you are going to apply a garage floor coating then don’t even waste your time with anything other than an epoxy product. If you do, you will most likely just be recoating again is a few months or years.
