Once upon a time, many years ago, I got one of my teeth knocked out by some drunken hoodlum in a bar. It was certainly not one of the proudest moments of my life; I had to face the harsh reality that I was not even gifted enough in the art of physical combat to ward of an attack by someone whose physical and mental functions were noticeably impaired. I certainly didn’t think I was provoking the loose fisted drunk, but either way, it happened. It was the only time a serious act of violence was directed at my person.

As if the shame of having been publicly shown physically inferior to someone (who would probably be unable to find his keys, while he was holding them in his hand) was not enough, I actually had to walk around with a tooth missing, as if to remind everyone what a failure I had been. Not to mention having to tell the embarrassing story every time someone would notice that I had a dark hole where a tooth used to reside.

I would love to tell the inspirational story of how that chance encounter had opened my eyes to the harsh realities of the world and my own physical weakness. I wish this story continued with me hitting the gym like crazy every week, and learning all sort of kung fu like moves. It would be so great to tell you that I met my attacker years later, thwarted his aggressions, humiliated him as much as he had done to me, and stole his stone cold fox of a girlfriend in the process. But alas, this is not what happened.

Instead, you get the story of how I got my tooth back.. I did not have dental insurance at the time, so whatever solution would present itself, would have to come out of my own pocket. I mentally prepared myself to do a lot of saving, because it was either not going clubbing for a while or bearing the mark of defeat for the rest of my life.

I searched online to see which cosmetic dental procedures could help me with my problem. I quickly found information on cosmetic bonding, veneers and all sorts of other procedures that were of no use to me. I found out my best two options to either get a denture or  dental implants.

I had to make a decision between the two of these. While dentures were a lot more affordable than dental implants, I simply could not shake the image of my having to pull it out every time I went to sleep. So my problems were solved. I made a consultation appointment with the dentist, and not too long after had an endosteal implants placed into my jawbone.

And while I never met my aggressor again and never managed to steal his girlfriend, I have found one of my own. And a few days ago I asked her, “Honey, would you still love me if missed a tooth?”
And she responded, “Of course I would, sweety.”

It is the goal of many people to be free from their jobs. It’s probably your dream as well to escape the 9-5. However, how will you replace that income? Recently I’ve adopted a new practice drill that offers some fun variety to what can otherwise be a very boring activity. We’ve all struggled from time to time with getting the most from our practice session, yet diligent practice is vital to learning how to play pool for beginners. Without it, our pool games will never improve, or improve only incrementally, and our success during competition will suffer. So how can we put some pizazz back into our drills so we can play better pool ? How can we help ourselves maintain interest and focus?

What I’ve begun to do is take a snapshot of the table’s layout after breaking into a rack. I just use my cellphone’s camera, nothing special. After the break, I take a pic, and then start analyzing the table for what strategies and tactics I want to use. Once I’ve run out the rack, or flubbed a shot or position and can’t continue, I review in my head what worked or didn’t work the way I wanted it to. Then I use my snapshot to put all the balls back into their positions after that break, re-analyze, and attack the run-out again.

Repetition is a key tool when practicing for any skill and learning how to play better pool. It teaches you muscle-memory and ingrains successful actions and failed actions into your subconscious so that you may fall back on past experiences to help make quick, intuitive choices during competition. Practice diligently wherever you can, whether you have a nice Mizerak pool table available, or simply a beat-up bar table.  Perfect repetition, perfect focus on the tasks at hand, perfect PRACTICE is difficult. Especially because practice inevitably entails performing the same actions over and over again, encouraging boredom.

By breaking into a new rack and then taking a snapshot of it to use for resetting the table layout, you give yourself unique practice challenges. You can run through the same rack for a few times, trying to devise the best way to make your shots and control cue ball positions. And then, when you feel yourself getting a bit bored, you can break new, take a new pic, and start with some fresh puzzles to challenge yourself with.

This sort of exercise is great for keeping your mind fresh and sharp and laser-focused on getting the maximum from your practice session. I use it quite often now, and I no longer disappoint myself with poor, mind-numbed practice results. My success during league competition or even friendly nights out with my chums has improved dramatically.

If you love to drink tea but you do not like the mess tea leaves make, there is another solution besides buying tea bags.  You can use a tea infuser to make your tea; it works great for both black tea and the full leaf teas such as oolong and green tea.

The small tea infuser such as the ball infuser or teaspoon infuser or pyramid infuser for example are made to set directly down in the cup or mug. You fill the main section about half full with tea leaves, pop it into your cup or mug and then pour boiling water directly over the infuser. Let it steep for two of three minutes and then take it out of the cup and enjoy your tea. If you use whole leaf tea rather than the powdered black tea leaves, you can actually use the leaves one or two more times before having to toss them out.

One of the key things in making a great cup of tea with a tea  infuser is making sure you buy the right sized infuser. They do come in different sizes. Generally, if you are planning on drinking loose leaf tea (not black tea) choose the larger sized infuser. For example, there may be three different sized ball infusers, all small enough to sit inside a cup or a mug. If you want to drink green or oolong tea, choose the larger of the three as that will allow more room for the expansion of the tea leaves and will ultimately provide you with a better tasting cup of tea.

In fact, tea infusers are perfect for those who love to drink Asian teas yet are not able to have all of their tea paraphernalia set up at work, for example.  If you are a loose leaf tea connoisseur you will know that it is often a little more complex to make loose leaf tea than tea using black tea leaves. However, being able to place the leaves inside of an infuser rather than having to cope with all of those wet tea leaves makes it much simpler to prepare these type of teas even if you are at work, or someplace where you cannot take your entire tea set with you.

There are many different types of tea infusers, just find something that is appealing to you and that works easily.  Look for an infuser that is easy to open, that latches closed well and preferably that has either a chain or some way of fishing it out of your cup without your having to put your fingers or a teaspoon into the cup to get it out. I collect glass many-things, but one of my favorites is glass candle holders. They come in all the colors of the rainbow, and some colors not seen in a rainbow, by the human eye at least. The same shape in a dozen colors can make an impressive display. And, as a lover of glass, I really want one of every color possible, so small glass candle holders allow me to try to achieve this goal within my budget and storage capacities.

The small, simple round tea-light holder is my current candidate for this goal. At each season or holiday, a set of four, six or eight can be found, all wrapped up in a thin plastic box, and all bought with a single payment, usually very low. Not every store that sells candles will have this set of glass candle holders, and not every store that has it this time will have one next time, but the set is out there somewhere. I just have to find it.

Sometimes the tea candle holders are at the dollar store, which tells you how much they cost to manufacture. Sometimes they are at the discount clothes or household goods stores. Sometimes you have to wait for the season’s end sales to get then at a reasonable price at a fancier store.

I have the standard colors, red, green, yellow, blue, and I have some of the in between colors, like two shades between red and orange, and a light purple. Because I want not just all the colors, but those colors saturated and pale and in between. It occurs to me that this is going to be a big collection when I am through, if I ever get through. One reason for using a small glass candle holder to pursue it.

Maybe I would do better to collect all the colors of glass as beaded bracelets. That would be fun.
